Let me preface this by saying: Uchi is not a cheap date. You're going to spend some money here. But every now and then, you deserve to splurge on something special, and when that mood strikes, Uchi is where you want to be.

I finally made a reservation for my birthday last month after years of hearing Austinites rave about this place. And now I get it. I really, really get it.

The Space

Uchi is tucked into a converted bungalow on South Lamar, and the vibe is intimate without being stuffy. The lighting is dim, the decor is minimal and elegant, and there's an energy in the room that says "something special is happening here." You can sit at the sushi bar and watch the chefs work, which I highly recommend if you can snag a spot.

The Food

Chef Tyson Cole won a James Beard Award for a reason. The menu at Uchi is Japanese-inspired but not strictly traditional—there are creative twists and unexpected flavor combinations that somehow just work.

We went the omakase route, which means you let the chef decide what you're eating. It's a trust fall, and it paid off beautifully.

A few standouts:

The Hama Chili – Yellowtail sashimi with ponzu, Thai chili, and orange. The citrus and heat play off the buttery fish perfectly. This one's been on the menu for years and there's a reason it's still there.

Wagyu Beef Sashimi – Melt-in-your-mouth beef with a soy glaze. I audibly sighed after the first bite.

The Uchi Salad – Look, I don't usually get excited about salads, but this one with its miso dressing and crispy elements had me reconsidering my stance.

Pork Jowl – Crispy, fatty, sweet, and savory all at once. This was the dish that made me close my eyes and just appreciate the moment.

Every course was thoughtfully plated, and the pacing was perfect—never rushed, never too slow.

The Damage

Our omakase dinner for two, with a couple of drinks, came out to about $350 with tip. Yeah, it's a lot. But for a special occasion? Absolutely worth it.

You can also order à la carte if you want to control the budget a bit more. A few dishes and some sushi rolls will still give you a taste of what Uchi does best without the full omakase commitment.

The Verdict

Uchi isn't an everyday spot—it's a celebration spot. An anniversary, a promotion, a "I survived another year in this wild city" kind of place. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere is perfect for a special night out, and you'll leave feeling like you just had one of the best meals of your life.
