Home Slice Pizza: New York Style in the Heart of South Congress

Austin isn't exactly known for pizza. We've got tacos, barbecue, Tex-Mex for days—but good pizza? That used to be a struggle. Then Home Slice showed up on South Congress and changed the game.

I've been eating at Home Slice since they opened back in 2005, and after nearly two decades, they're still the gold standard for New York-style pizza in this city.

The Pizza

The pizza here is legit. Thin, foldable crust with just the right amount of chew. Tangy tomato sauce that doesn't overpower. Cheese that gets those perfect little brown spots on top.

You can grab a slice at the walk-up window next door (More Home Slice) or sit down and order a full pie. Either way, you're getting the same quality.

The Classic Cheese – Sometimes simple is best. Their plain cheese slice is everything a New York slice should be. Fold it, don't fold it—just eat it.

Pepperoni – The pepperoni cups up and gets crispy on the edges, which is exactly what you want. Greasy in the best possible way.

The Brooklyn Bridge – White pizza with ricotta, mozzarella, and garlic. Creamy, garlicky, indulgent. This one's dangerous.

Hot Mess – Pepperoni, jalapeños, and honey. Sweet, spicy, salty, porky—it's a lot going on, but it works.

Beyond Pizza

Their salads are actually solid if you want to pretend you're being healthy before destroying a pizza. The antipasto is loaded and shareable. And the garlic knots? Get the garlic knots. They're pillowy, buttery, garlicky perfection.

The Vibe

Home Slice has that classic pizzeria energy—checkered floors, vintage signs, booths packed with families and groups of friends. It's loud, it's fun, and it smells incredible the moment you walk in.

The South Congress location is the original, and it's still my favorite. There's something about eating pizza on SoCo, maybe grabbing some weird vintage finds after, that just feels right.

They've expanded to other locations now (North Loop, East 7th), so you've got options depending on where you are in the city.

The Wait

Home Slice gets busy. Like, really busy. Peak hours on weekends can mean a solid wait for a table. The move is to either go at an off-time, put your name in and walk around South Congress until they text you, or just hit the walk-up window for slices.

The Verdict

Home Slice is the real deal. If you're from New York and you're skeptical about Texas pizza, this is the place that might change your mind. If you're a local who just wants a great slice without any fuss, same thing.

It's been a South Congress staple for almost 20 years for a reason. Go get yourself a slice.

Address: 1415 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704 (original location)

Pro tip: The walk-up window at More Home Slice next door is perfect for a quick slice and a beer. No wait, no fuss, just pizza.
